People who work on roofs, buildings, bridges, and other high places need to be protected in case they slip and fall. Many people are hurt and killed every year when they are working high above the ground and something happens to make them drop to the ground. Using fall arrest anchor can help protect you, your fellow workers, and employees from becoming a victim if they slip and head down towards the floor level. There are a number of different products to choose from, beginning with roof anchors, ladder safety systems, portable barrier and safety netting systems, horizontal lifeline devices and full body harnesses.
Roof anchors are devices that can be affixed to the roof that a worker can attach a life line to in case they start to slip. The life line can stop their descent when the rope tightens and cannot go any further. Some types can be permanently attached to the roof top edge, or you can get reusable ones that are removed after you are done.
Ladder Safety Systems are devices that have a cable running up and down the ladder. The worker wears a harness that has a locking mechanism attached to the harness and the cable. If they fall, the locking mechanism engages and stops the worker after a few inches. These are made for virtually all ladder heights.
For those working on flat roof tops, there are portable barrier systems that are installed along the edges of the rooftop. When someone is working close to the side, and they happen to step too close to the edge, this barrier will stop them from falling much like a fence would stop someone from getting to the other side in a backyard.
There are those who work high on beams, or on bridges, where if they were to slip, thy would drop straight down to the ground. The installation of safety nets is designed to catch them much like a trapeze net would catch an acrobatic performer in the circus. While these are good, they should be used with other safety equipment meant to stop the fall at the beginning.
Horizontal lifeline devices are similar to the ladder safety system in that a harness is worn and a line is attached to a cable. The difference is that the cable is stretched horizontally across a specific stretch of a work zone space and there is not a locking mechanism to stop the fall. Here the safety line is of a very limited length and that is what will stop a worker from continuing their descent.
Fully body harnesses are wrapped around the shoulders, waist, chest, and under the legs and inner thighs to give total harness protection. These are attached to climbing ropes where a worker can swing freely from spot to spot, and where setting a ladder or scaffold is too time consuming to get a quick task completed.
