Cat Behaviour

Cats are so commonplace that we scarcely look at what they do and why they do it, but cat behaviour is quite an interesting subject really, particularly for cat owners and animal lovers.

Cat behaviour is usually taken to mean that of household cats, although they do share some characteristics with their larger wild relatives.

A cat’s behaviour for the most part depends on whether it is a lone cat or one of a number in a household. Cats are normally solitary animals just coming together to mate, although they will usually co-exist with other cats in a house, especially if they met while they were young or those that were introduced were kittens.

You may become problems of territorialism if you endeavour to introduce an older cat into a house, where another cat has been living for a time. This is comparable to wild cats, which have their hunting ground that they patrol and delineate with urine and faeces each day. Tom cats sometimes do this at home, much to the annoyance of their owners.

Rubbing has a comparable meaning. A cat rubs with scent glands on its face to mark something as its own, especially territory, which is all cats really worry about except food.

Kneading or knitting is another common mannerism in household cats, although it is not actually well understood.

When a cat arches its back, it is probably signalling to its assailant that it is bigger than they think it is. It is also an attack stance. With its back arched, a cat can rear up in order to claw a taller opponent, but it can also jump or run, whichever action is apposite. The hissing goes with arching to deter the antagonist.

Cats do not have a broad vocal range and, being nocturnal hunters, they have developed a great deal of ‘eye language’. For instance, if a cat is pleased, it’s eyes dilate – a bit like when humans look at their loved ones.

However, it also happens in cats when they are hunting, which means either that they enjoy that activity or that they have to get as much light as possible to see by.

Your Vegetarian Baby

After the baby has been weaned, the choices are easier again. You can create fantastic baby food recipes with fresh fruit and vegetables and a blender. Soya is another vegetable product that is useful for your baby’s vegetarian diet because it is one of the few vegetable sources of protein.

Soya is also very adaptable, although not always recommended for very young babies. You can eat or drink soya and you can bake, boil or fry it. It is fairly bland on its own, yet it takes on the flavours of whatever you cook it with, so it can be used to push up the protein content of practically anything.

If you are intent on raising your child as a vegetarian or even a vegan, you have to be very cautious after weaning, not to replace your own milk with cow’s milk. However, this is where you will have to take advice from your doctor and midwife.

Do not let philosophy and principles stand in the way of your baby’s health. If your doctor chooses that your baby actually needs the things that are to be had in cow’s milk, then so be it, unless you seek out a vegetarian doctor for a second opinion.

At around six months of age, babies can start eating cereals. Rice is one of the easiest to digest. You can make a very thin rice meal by boiling the rice in water until it practically disappears, leaving that characteristic white water. Millions of Asian babies grow up on rice water each year.

As a vegetarian of some experience, you will have a good idea about which combinations of food fulfill dietary requirements, so you will be able to use this information to make sure that your baby does not go short of anything, and pay particular attention to any deficiencies that the doctor notices.

Would An Air Purifiers Help My Allergy?

Are you one of the growing numer of people who suffer from an allergy? If you are then you have probably already tried different ways to manage your allergy, but have you ever thought of using an anti-allergy air purifier? They are not that expensive, but the real question is, whether anti-allergy air purifiers work or not.

However, the answer to this question is not quite so straight forward. In short and in general, yes, anti-allergy air purifiers do work, but there are a few catches. Not all substances that cause allergies are easy to trap and not all anti-allergy air purifiers are as good as each other. Additionally, it takes different types of air purifiers to get rid of different allergens. You are unlikely to find one portable anti-allergy air purifier that will eliminate all allergens.

However, second-hand tobacco smoke is better trapped by liquid anti-allergy air purifiers and bacteria is killed only with a system which passes the air through ultraviolet light. Even so, this UV light must be at least 24,000 microwatts UVGI, or else it is practically useless.

Airborne mold and mildew can be trapped with anti-allergy air purifiers that produce ozone, although you should really call a contractor in to find and alleviate the cause of the mold or mildew.

After you have found out what you are allergic to and discovered what type of anti-allergy air purification system will eliminate that allergen, you have to decide whether you want a portable system or a whole house air purification system. Portable units are all right for one room, a caravan or a trailer or even a tent, but once someone opens the door, you lose a lot of the air that you have scrubbed.

Who Are The Advantages Of Worm Farming?

Why on Earth would anyone like to ‘grow worms’ or have pets of worms? It is a decent question. After all, you cannot take them for a stroll and they will probably never recognize you, because they are blind. However, there are good reasons for establishing a worm farm.

Gardeners know that earthworms are useful for the soil. They also know that red worms will break down organic matter in the compost heap. Anglers know that worms make decent bait for freshwater fish and teachers will bear out the fact that children like to watch a small indoor worm farm.

Environmentalists will also inform you that the worm population is in decline in some areas because of the excessive use of pesticides and other pollutants such as acid rain.

Therefore, if you would like more than one or two worms to put in a glass case for children to observe, the best place to buy them is from a worm farm. And there is lots of money in it as well.

Of course, I am talking about two sorts of worm farms here. There is the small worm farm glass box, like an ant farm, used for educational purposes in the sphere of natural science and the large-scale, industrial farms intended to supply worms to industries and stores.

Who would spend money on a worm farm and why? Well, schools, parents and small zoos may do so for educational purposes. After all, it does not cost a lot to feed worms with a few dead leaves and they are not violent. Health and safety is not an aspect that relates to a table-top glass worm farm.

Industrial size worm farms do not have to be that big. You could have one in the back yard and produce millions of worms to sell. You could sell them to gardeners who have deprived soil; to fishing bait shops; to a zoo for food and to apartment-owners with window boxes.

Substantial zoos almost certainly already have their own worm farms to feed to lizards, snakes, birds and some mammals, but they would be pleased to know where there is a back-up supply should all their worms die for some reason or other.

Someone who breeds birds, reptiles or amphibians would also benefit from a small worm farm. It is such a lot easier and cheaper to ‘grow your own’ than have to purchase them from a pet shop, which probably also has its own worm farm.

Farmers who keep chickens would also benefit from a worm farm, because the chickens could be fed on organically fed worms and a nearby supply would stop the chickens from wandering much from home, which means a better harvest of eggs for the farmer.

When you are able to see the advantages of worm farming, you can lift your horizon from the modest earthworm and think about cultivating special worms like the red ones in the compost container or the ones that foreign birds and reptiles like. The more specialist you are, the more you can charge.

Exterior Shutters For Security And Lighting Purposes

When you want to add style to your house, one way of doing this and adding security at the same time, is by having window shutters fixed to the exterior of your house. Exterior window shutters add a traditional, Mediterranean look to a property. These days, most houses have glass windows, but before that, people used shutters to regulate the light levels, prevent insects and the cold from entering and for protection.

Exterior window shutters are available in many different shapes and made from various materials, although the most common ones are wooden and oblong. The quality of the materials used will determine how long your shutters will last, because, as with all exterior goods, they will be exposed to all types of extreme weather conditions.

Plastic, vinyl, metal and wooden shutters are available at many home improvement centres. Although they look fantastic, shutters also have practical uses. They can prevent glaring noon sunlight from over heating your home as well as offering protection.

Cedar wood is a good choice, as are most other hard woods. Hardwoods are more resistant to rain and sunlight and, so long as they are painted, stained or oiled regularly – at least once a year – then your shutters will give you ten or more years of effective service.

Most varieties of hardwood are very resistant to attack from insects too. This is because a lot of them contain oils that are repugnant or even poisonous to insects. However, if you are uncertain about the quality of the timber that your shutters are crafted from, you can paint them.

Painting, staining or oiling is far easier if you carry it out before you hang the shutters. If you want to use oil to protect your new wooden shutters, first stain them to the colour that you want them to be with a stain without varnish. When you have accomplished the desired shade and it has dried, pour oil linseed oil onto a cloth and rub it into the wood in circular motions. The more coats you give it the better, but it may not accept more that two or three coats.

If you want to varnish your shutters, either stain them to the colour you require as above and then seal them with clear yacht varnish or use a stained yacht varnish without the stain. Whichever way you go, thin the first coat of varnish down until it is almost watery. Paint it on and leave to dry. Rub it down with medium coarse sandpaper and then coat it again with neat varnish. Wait for it to dry and sand it down again, but with fine sandpaper. Add at least one more coat, but it is a matter of the more the better.

If you want to paint them, apply a primer or some thinned down undercoat. Wait for it to dry and sand it lightly with fine sandpaper. Next, put on a coat of undercoat that is suitable for the finishing colour. For example, grey is good for black, brown and even green or red. Sand it down when it is dry with fine paper. Finally, gloss your shutters with the final colour.

In conclusion, hang the shutters on apposite hinges using brass screws. Next time, you paint or varnish your shutters paint over the screw heads, although brass never looks out of place anyway.

Tackling Garden Pests

If you have a lovely garden of flowers or / and vegetables, you can be sure that you will not be the sole one appreciating it.

However, the vast majority of the others will be unwelcome. Pests are bound to be eying up your plants with evil intentions as far as you are concerned.

If you prize your flowers and vegetables you will have to do something to cope with them. How earnestly you take this quest is naturally up to you, but a garden will soon get overrun if you do nothing at all.

There are basically two ways of dealing with garden insects: there are items that you can use, so-called mechanical methods and spray killers such as insecticide and fungicide. These two ways offer an infinite variation of combinations to deal with backyard bugs.

A good instance of a mechanical method of protection is the covered frame. A covered frame is a five sided box with no bottom. You stand it over your plants especially while they are young. The top of the box may be perspex, glass or fly screen.

The plastic, perspex or glass top is good for protecting the plant from frost as well as bugs, whereas the fly screen will let the elements in but protect the plant from insects and birds. They might be thought of as winter and summer protection respectively.

A cheaper manner of protecting young plants from perhaps cut-worm, is to cut the top and bottom off a drinks can and then cut the body into three rings. Place a ring around a plant and push it at least an inch into the ground, leaving an inch or two showing. Leave the cut edges ragged and rough to deter slugs, snails and cut-worms from scrambling over it.

If that is too much trouble, you could use plastic bottle rings or cardboard treated with oil – maybe WD40 – which will ward off pests too as the above and stop it getting ruined by rain. . If you would like to spray your fruit, you will need a spray-gun. You can either get one with a compressor or you could pump it up yourself. The latter are much cheaper, do a decent job and provide more exercise.

The chemicals used in these sprays is quite corrosive, so buy a spray tank that will resist this. Aluminium, stainless steel or brass are the best, but you should take advice depending on the chemicals used.

Cheaper models will rust away fairly quickly. Make certain you may buy extension rods for spraying into trees if necessary.

Slugs and snails are not keen on travelling over rough terrain, so you should save all your egg shells, crush them into a coarse grit and lay them in a ring around your plants.

The weather will break them down, but they contain nutrients that are good for the garden anyway.

If you have an ants nest exactly where you do not want one, wait until the spring or early summer and lay a piece of slate or tile on top of the entrance to the nest. Put an upturned flowerpot on top of this and cover the hole in the base of it.

After a few dry days, the ants will have brought a few hundred eggs up onto the slate. You can eat these – Thais say they are an aphrodisiac – or you may feed them to your fish. After a few weeks of this the ants will become discouraged and will move their nest elsewhere.
