Working From Home: Transform Your Empty Attic Into An Office

One of the initial issues I had when I started working from home is that I had to use the master bedroom or the living as my makeshift office. The cluttered paperwork and files proved very difficult to manage, so I made the decision to repurpose the empty attic into my very own working space. After much thought, loft conversion seemed to be the most practical choice. For one, it is much cheaper than having to build an extension to the house. Secondly, I would be sparing my wife’s beloved and well-manicured garden by just maximizing the available attic space instead of building a detached shed.

I am not very confident with my carpentry skills, so for this project, I hired a structural engineer to draw up plans for the attic and a builder to realize them. Hence, for this conversion, I got the services of a structural engineer who created plans for the loft, and a builder to implement them. In order to mitigate costs, I invested some elbow grease with tasks I felt I was competent enough to do.

The ceiling joists in my house prior to the project were only designed to support the weight of the ceiling. Therefore, one of the renovations we did was to install I-beams below the ceiling so it can accommodate the loft’s flooring and contents.

We also installed drywall panels and had the walls insulated so that the loft is comfortable regardless of season. The attic windows were also replaced since they do not open. I went for a couple of roof windows instead of a dormer since the former will no longer necessitate restructuring of the roof itself and they will already provide the loft with substantial light.

To provide access to the loft, I also had a ladder installed. I chose a retractable ladder rather than fixed stairs since the latter will consume a lot of space. There were a lot of attic ladders to choose from. Some of those I saw were wooden loft ladders and those made from aluminum and steel. While wooden loft ladders are much cheaper, I felt that aluminum attic ladders are much sturdier.

Since the intent was to convert the attic into an office, I also had light fixtures and switches, and plugs installed. To have these installed, I got the services of an electrical contractor. I also added a Murphy bed to one of the walls so the loft can function as an emergency guest bedroom as well. The loft conversion took about twelve working days to finish and set me back around $20,000 which included both materials and professional fees.
