My Religious Ways In Later Years

In my twenties I carried on reading books on philosophy and religion, but I tended towards Buddhism and Hinduism, which seemed very closely related to my family’s spiritualist beliefs. I practiced yoga, but being physically lazyish by nature, I preferred the more psychic exercises.

I meditated. I would not drink alcohol for 48 hours before the evening that I had asked for permission to meditate; then I would exercise, bathe and lie down in a dimly lit room. I used to begin by relaxing my body.

The course of action that worked best for me was to imagine tiny factory workers in overalls at each muscle and, starting from my feet, I would send them off for lunch. I would walk them all up into my head and out of my ears so that I was ‘paralyzed’. Then, I imagined a fissure opening up in the middle of my mind and I forced my thoughts jump over it as it grew wider.

Petty thoughts disappeared quickly, but even persistent, deep-seated worries would eventually fall down the crack. Then I would be left alone in me. I never got rid of ‘me’ strive as I might. The next step for me would be to pose a question.

An example is: ‘How can I tell the difference between a significant dream and my mind merely processing the day;s activities?’ Almost always I would see myself, from the back or over head, sitting in a cinema or a theatre alone.

Then someone would appear on stage and start a film. The person would commentate and stop and restart the film until I understood the answer to my question. The person was nearly always the same one, but if it was not, I made him tell me his name before I would pay any attention.

In this state, people who saw me reckoned that I was asleep, but I could hear each noise that was made in the house and on the street outside. People said I snored as well, but I could hear myself snoring.

To this day, if I relax deeply, I snore but I can hear everything and am not asleep. My wife often turns the TV off while I am listening to it. I know that lots of men say that, which makes it more, not less, true. It proves that meditation is natural and that we can all do it if we give ourselves the opportunity.

When I was a teenager, I got into the habit of scribbling my dreams down, because I have the type of memory that remembers items when I have written them down. I can throw the paper away then and I will remember|.

Anyway, I am able to remember my dreams now without having to write them down, but what is more valuable than that in my mind is that I have always known if I am dreaming. One last thing, when I walk in my dreams it is on two legs but if I run it is on all fours like a dog. Many people have called me ‘wolf’ or ‘bear’ in my life, have they seen something? (My wife says she sees me as a wolf too)’

I do not mean anything weird, but it is a bit of a coincidence or not? Last year, I was talking to a girlfriend of my wife and she said that she runs on all fours in her dreams too. She was flabbergasted when I said I did too. How many more are there?

Methods Of Getting Your Child Interested In Religion

Whether you yourself have an interest in religion or not, there may come a time when you consider it your duty to offer your child the opportunity to discover religion for itself. You might be an atheist or you may have a particular creed or religion that you prefer, but is that a reason to make your child follow you?

Most children do not connect church with fun (and you might well argue that fun has nothing to with it), so how to you inspire an interest in religion? There appear to be merely two methods: you can either make it more fun or you can compel them. We all know that compulsion tends to have the opposite effect from the one desired, so how do you make going to church fun or at least interesting?

The beginning of going to church alone for most children is Sunday School, so you could start there. This is not about you or your religious education, so whatever you believe, you could go along to the Sunday Schools of a few local churches and find out what activities they hold.

If the Sunday school is dull and boring, your child will not stay there and may be put off for decades or even life. Going to church or to Sunday schools should be about religious education and moral guidance not about coercion and indoctrination.

You do not have to have faith in everything your religious instructor tells you to become a decent, moral, religious person no matter which denomination you belong to. There are not many religious teachers in any church who would say that they ‘know it all’. If they did they would not have to to pray for guidance themselves!

Events that young children might find interesting are approximately the same as those they would do in a regular school, but with a slightly more religious bent. These include: painting, drawing, singing, reading, story-telling, playing and sports. The extra reading practice at Sunday school may really give your child the upper hand when it comes to the state school curriculum as well.

Older children will like sport, dancing (barn dances, line-dancing, ballroom dancing), singing, putting on plays and discussion groups. Children outside this environment will almost certainly never be in a play or never learn to Tango in their lives, yet it is a godsend in life to have done it at least once.

Debating is another skill that most people do not have either. Learning fund raising and public speaking are excellent skills that are not taught often in state schools any more either.

If your children do not like the Sunday school that you would like them to attend, let them go to another one. Any extra education is better than none or roaming the streets. In my case, my parents were Spiritualists, but my mother’s family were Catholics.

My school was Church of Wales (similar to the Church of England), the Boy Scouts I was in were Methodists, but they went to a Baptist Church because it was closer. I enjoyed the singing in all the churches and I still know the songs 45 years later!

Five Steps On The Road To Spiritual, Physical And Financial Success

Are you looking for the path to success? Are you tired of scraping and pinching to make ends meet?

Have you had it up to here with schemers who tell you they know all about you even though you have not met before telling you all you need to do to achieve fabulous wealth is to buy into their latest “business opportunity?”

You can’t go anywhere these days without someone in your face touting the next great road to success that will make you an extremely wealthy person in just a few short hours. All you have to do is follow his simple formula to guaranteed instant success. Yeah, right.

These cons and half-truths actually hide the real steps one can follow to achieve true success. There really is a method and it does promise you success. It is however, not available in any market for any price.

Follow the five steps outlined below and you will find the fulfillment you seek at no cost.

1. Find your calling. What is it that in your heart you feel is the real you? What is your spot on the planet? Can whatever it is support you and your family? If you know your calling and can answer yes to the question about supporting you and your family, do not hesitate to follow through on that thought. Doing something you love is the ultimate path to success.

2. Are you working on securing success? Are you motivating yourself along the right road or are you standing in front of yourself blocking the road? Take a careful look at your actions, thoughts and motivations before automatically coming to the conclusion that you can’t go ahead because external forces are holding you back.

3. Free your imagination. The world of facts is limiting, the world of the imagination knows no bounds. Unfetter that imagination and let it run free and you will find no obstacles in your path and no limits to how far you can go.

4. Believe in yourself. Self confidence can achieve wonders. Let yourself shine.

5. Give back to your family, your community, all those people and institutions that have encouraged you along the way. By giving, you will be helping someone else, and funny enough it all comes back to you. Maybe its karma or fate, call it what you want, but there really is something to the concept that what you give to others will come back to you and your loved ones in many ways.

You can find a way to keep your head above water and reach the success you desire. Spend some time to discover your own personal path and don’t let your imagination fail you. You will be amazed at what lies ahead when you do.

A Brief History Of Hinduism

Hinduism is a complex blend of polytheistic religion, a (belief in many gods, rather like the Greek and the Roman deities) and philosophy. It stemmed from Vedism, which dates back to the second millennium before Christ. It is not surprising therefore that numerous sects have developed or broken away from a faith of this age.

However, most of these sects read the one book, the Vedic writings known universally as the ‘Upanishads’, and their differences result from their individual interpretations of it. These texts describe the events of Shiva, the creator, preserver and destroyer of the universe and they are based on even more ancient texts such as the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and, less famous in the West, the Puaranas.

The Bhagavad Gita, the Lord’s Song, a part of the Mahabharata, retells a dialogue between Krishna (another incarnation of the god Vishnu) and the acolyte Prince Arjuna. This dialogue sheds light on the three paths to enlightenment or union with God.

This might sound dreary, but I can promise you that reading the Bhagavad Gita could easily transform the way that you look upon life no matter which religion you believe in, if you have one.

The basics of Hinduism are that people ought to try to connect their selves (Atman) with the Godhead (Brahman) and reincarnation (samsara). Just what people come back as is determined by how they have led their lives, that is, one’s actions (karma) and one’s duty (dharma).

This continuous reincarnation into a life of suffering can only be broken when one reaches the Godhead in a state of Atman-Brahman. Their are four paths to achieve this divine state in Hinduism. These are: jnana yoga, which is based on knowledge; bhakti yoga, which is based on service to God; karma yoga, which is based on work for God (rather than oneself) and raja yoga, which is based on psychophysical exercise.

Raja yoga, or the ‘Royal Path’, is the kind of yoga that most Westerners will have heard of and seen. Raja yoga is more common in these West these days than at any other time in history.

Hinduism has three principal theistic traditions founded on anthropomorphic gods. Vishnu is a loving god incarnated as Krishna; Shiva is both protective and destructive and Brahma is the creator. Saktism is a form of worship dedicated to the female partners of Vishnu and Shiva. Hindu’s venerate all forms of life, but the most sacred animal to Hindus is the cow.

Hindu worship revolves around a person’s and a family’s dedication to a particular ‘favourite’ god or group of gods. The act of worship is carried out at a shrine, which can be at home or communally in public. There are several places of pilgrimage including the Ganges in northern India.

The three primary festivals are Dipavali – the ‘festival of lights’ – which sacred to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity; Holi, a spring festival and Dashara, a harvest festival.

Hinduism is the oldest of the world’s great religions. It is most widespread in India, which has outlawed the ancient caste system of Hinduism. This caste system used to divide society into five main groups: brahmins were leaders, philosophers and artists; kshatriyas were princes, soldiers and administrators; vaishyas were merchants and landowners; shudras were labourers and the rest were outcasts or untouchables.

Buddhism And Buddhist Sects

Following Buddha’s death in 483 BC, his nearest followers (his disciple monks) took time off their preaching to write down his sermons (sutras) and his regulations (vinayas). In the old tradition of Buddha, monks initially walked the countryside preaching and teaching for nine months of the year and went to sit out the monsoon period in a retreat for three months.

These retreats became monasteries and temples. The retreat into monasteries was important in the development of different interpretations of Buddha’s teachings and in due course led to the formation of various sects which gained popularity in various regions of Asia.

There are three foremost Buddhist sects: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana or Tantric Buddism.

Theravada Buddhism is the principal sect in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand and is the sect that remains most loyal to Buddha’s original doctrines. Theravada Buddhism teaches that the path to the achievement of personal Nirvana is the objective of life. It is a very personal religion in that everybody is alone on their own path to enlightenment.

Mahayana Buddism grew into the largest sect and spread along the Silk Road from India through China to east Asia beginning in around 200 BC. Mahayana Buddhists worship Buddha and the Buddhist saints (bodhisattvas – literally ‘wisdom beings’).

Bodhisattvas are beings that restrain themselves from attaining Nirvana (and therefore leaving the wheel of life or cycle of birth, death and reincarnation) so that they may help others achieve Nirvana, which is a major difference between it and Theravada Buddhism.

Mahayana Buddhism is more easily absorbed by different cultures than the other forms which accounts for it having spread so far. The Buddhist emperor Ashoka (272-232 BC) gave Mahayana a colossal boost in popularity by sending missionaries to Sri Lanka, south-east Asia and China from where it was carried to Korea and Japan in the Sixth Century anno domini.

Zen Buddhism grew in popularity in Japan and China in the Seventh Century. Zen Buddhism is a variation of Mahayana Buddhism and teaches that Nirvana can be attained through mental conditioning and meditation.

Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism arose in the Seventh Century as well and is most common in Tibet and Mongolia. Vajrayana Buddhism tries to identify the initiate with a visualized deity. Tantric cannon includes esoteric writings, teaching that meditation can engage the mind by the use of mantras (chants), mudras (hand gestures) and mandalas (visible icons). The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and temporal head of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhists.

Buddhism reached its height of popularity in China during the T’ang dynasty in the Ninth Century, when it was partially suppressed by royal command. Similarly Zen attained its height of popularity in the Nineteen Century when the Japanese royal family switched to Shintoism taking numerous royal hangers-on with it. Buddhism declined in India too in the Eighth Century because lots of its principles were absorbed into Hinduism. Buddism was virtually extinct in India by the Thirteenth Century.
