Landscaping Your Garden In The Texas Style

Most people just let their garden develop naturally in that they do not choose a particular style. This is fine, but it can become a mess, if not looked after. Some people, however, intentionally choose to landscape their garden according to a clear style or a theme. Some of these themes are very sophisticated and others are fairly simple.

One of the many themes to pick from is the Texas Style. We all know that everything in Texas is done on a large scale, so you would be forgiven for thinking that landscaping in the Texas Style would necessitate a huge garden.

It is possibly easier to carry out your landscaping in the Texas Style in a bigger garden, but it just depends how you go about it.

The first points to remember are that Texas is very hot and so the terrain closely resembles desert. Plants and shrubs are thin on the ground, so to speak. Landscaping in the Texas Style is what you could call minimalist gardening.

You will have to make use of every square inch of your property, if you only have a small plot and the climate will have to be fairly warm in the daytime although it is good if it gets cold at night. This will allow you to grow many of the plants that thrive or at least grow in Texas. One good thing about Texan flowers is that when they do blossom, they really do show a lot of colour.

One of the kinds of plant that you are sure to have success with is the cactus. There are many varieties of cactus, so you should not have too much difficulty finding several types that will grow in your garden in order to produce a Texan dry climate look, as long as it does not rain every other day where you live.

Cacti yield spectacular flowers when they bloom, but they have big thorns, so if you have young children, the Texas Style garden may not be for you for a few years yet.

Once you have your plants sorted out, you can begin looking for accessories. You can pick up ideas from the old cowboy films and from magazines, but a few recommendations are: a chow wagon style barbecue area with a canvas hood; some broken wagon wheels; a well, functioning or not (it could even be a fish pond that looks like a well); boulders and wooden fence posts.

Boulders are often overlooked by gardeners but there are some fascinating stones, boulders and rocks in all kinds of shapes and colours. Boulders with fossils in them are fantastic conversation starters. Smaller rocks can be used to make a rock garden and this will increase the choice of plant life that you can grow in your Texas Style garden. You will be able to plant succulents, small cacti and other small plants that frequently grow in this harsh environment.

Lighting should be low and subtle so that you can see the stars at night. You could even have a camp fire with log seating or you can accomplish this look by using low powered solar lighting. Solar powered lighting will also save you from having to have an electrician wire up your garden.

When you have finished landscaping in the Texas Style, do not forget to get pleasure from it by eating outside as often as you can. Barbecues, steaks and Texmex food are the order of the day.

The Fundamentals Of Making Quilts

If you have never done any quilting before, you may be forgiven for thinking that it looks fairly simple. The fact is that it necessitates a lot of patience, skill and diligence to create a quilt. It really is not as simple as it looks. It takes practice and attention to detail. Given that, you must use good quality textiles if you are considering manufacturing a quilt.

Cotton is fine for the task, but it should be the lowest you will go. No polyester or other man-made textiles. If you do use these cheap fabrics and spend weeks making your first quilt, you will simply regret it. If you make mistakes, but the fabric is good at least there will be that one saving grace.

Once you have chosen your fabric, you can select the style or design that you want. This might seem backwards, and that is OK. If you want, you can choose the style first and then a fabric to match, but I would recommend that you simply stick with cotton for your first quilt.

Next, you have to get hold of a pattern. This is very straightforward. You can either become a member of a local quilting group, where people will give you conventional patterns or sell you modern ones; or you can go on line and look on Google or Yahoo for ‘free quilt patterns’ or you can go to your neighbourhood craft shop and buy one that suits your requirements.

You will also need a good set of tools to make your quilt. It is a good idea not to scrimp on these tools as they are not costly; will make your task a lot easier and will last a very long time. You will need at least one rotary cutter. ‘At least one’ because the wide blade cutters are very good for straight cuts whereas a small blade cutter is better for corners or shapes. By the way, these rotary cutters look like pizza cutters.

Because these cutters are sharp, you will also require a cutting board. This can be as simple as a sheet of plywood, trimmed to suit your table top or you can merely lay it on the floor. Without a board, you will damage your table or carpet. You will also need dress-maker’s scissors and large shears. Further requirements are pins, needles, cotton, straight edges and markers.

Your pattern will explain about batting and a back fabric and you must pay a great deal of attention to the recommendations in your pattern.

This article cannot be a ‘teach yourself quilting’ manual, but I hope that it has shown you that you do not need a great amount of apparatus to make very passable bedding quilts. However, with only a little adaptation of the pattern, you could make some beautiful duvet covers. Not many people make duvet covers, so you could either make them exclusively for yourself or sell them.

The Story Of The Cushion And The Pillow

In American phraseology, the words ‘cushion’ and ‘pillow’ are practically synonymous, but in the remainder of the English speaking world, a pillow is used on a bed for supporting the head and a cushion is used on elsewhere for supporting other parts of the body. A pillow is normally much larger than a cushion nowadays.

The cushion and pillow were most likely first used by wealthy Asian men to lounge on. They would probably be referred to as throw cushions nowadays. However, we are going back so far in history that dyes and textiles were very expensive, so pillows and cushions were just for the wealthy and the patterns were so intricate that they became pieces of art in themselves.

Needlework became a skilled profession as did weaving. Cushions were large sacks or cases filled with feathers, hair, wool, straw or something comparable. These days they are more likely to be filled with man-made fibres such as polyester. Down is the most costly filling particularly down from the eider duck.

Due to international trade, the idea of the cushion started moving westward and had arrived in Egypt by the time of the Pharaohs. Cushions have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. By the Middle Ages, cushions were to be seen in all the royal palaces of Europe. Cushions were still regarded as denoting wealth.

The cushions of the royal palaces were substantial enough to sit in, a bit like modern beanie bags, and even started replacing traditional chairs. In those days, cushions were very large sacks made of leather, many of which had needlework patterns on them.

Cushions were also used in churches for the wealthy to kneel on whilst saying their prayers. These special but small cushions were known as carreaux because they were square (from the French).

Nowadays cushions are everyday items because they are much cheaper. Most cushions in the West are 17 inches by 17 inches and the reason for this is the traditional size of a roll or bolt of fabric. A roll of fabric is traditionally 54 inches wide, so it could be cut into three pieces of 18 inches, allowing for seams, this permits the manufacturer to make a 17 inch cushion.

Japanese cushions were much and still are, but they have a different task. In the West they are used for support, whereas in the East they are used for sitting on on the floor. In Japanese they are known as ‘zabuton’ and measure 20-30 inches square by a few of inches thick, which is less than a quarter of the thickness of traditional Western cushions.

Zen meditators will frequently sit on another special cushion called a zafu or meditation cushion, which is placed on top of the zabuton. A zafu can be round or square but is small, often just 8-10 inches in diameter and 4-8 inches in thickness.

Zabuton are used in all aspects of Japanese life especially those facets that have religious overtones or traditions such as sumo. Spectators of the sport will sit on zabuton while watching the bouts. If there is a foul or a dispute, spectators often throw their zabuton into the ring in disgust.

How To Dress For A Change

Have you come to the conclusion that you would like a transformation of image? Or would you merely like to smarten yourself up a bit? Perhaps you have a new career with new colleagues and you want to take this opportunity to dress a bit more elegantly. Occasionally people like to transform their image whilst they are searching for or have recently discovered a new partner.

Whilst changing one’s image most individuals will focus on a new hair style and smarter clothes. Women might go for smart trouser suits or power dresses and men might decide to wear a lounge suit or a jacket and tie more frequently. If the weather is bad a costly overcoat always completes the image, particularly suede, cashmere or leather. It used to be that fur was de rigeur, but now it is duh.

However, there is another way of changing your image, a way that need not be that costly, although sometimes it takes courage to attempt it. That is the wearing or the using of accessories. Women have more scope here in numerous ways, but men have options as well.

Women can sport something in their new hair style; possibly co-ordinate bags and shoes; they can wear a different style of stockings or could start wearing gloves, white kid, for instance. They could change the style of jewelery they wear and the colour or their hair and lipstick. Belts, brooches, watches and scarves can also serve the end of changing ones image. They could also wear a fresh flower on their lapel, in their hair or behind their ear for that old style gypsy look :-) (that is the brave one).

Men have a somewhat harder time of it without appearing daft, but men can wear better shoes, wear a tie more often or an expensive watch. They could carry a briefcase and an umbrella, and wear a flower in their button hole, but this is where it begins to look a bit contrived. They could also wear a monocle, a pocket watch or a bow tie.

My cousin wears a monocle and once you overcome your first instinct to laugh, you have to admit that he looks quite elegant. The same is the case with bow ties, which he wears as well and insists on tying it by hand. He also carries an umbrella, a briefcase and wears pinstripes. He is very brave and he is noticed and remembered wherever he goes.

However, you do not need to go that far. Even merely wearing a bow tie instead of a tie will set you apart. Have you noticed that if you are talking to someone wearing a bow tie you cannot stop staring at it? It is the men’s equivalent of a woman’s low-cut dress.

Anyway, accessories are a less expensive way of altering your image than going out and buying a new wardrobe of outfits and they are more easily combined that different suits. Go for colours that combine easily, like blacks, greys, browns and off-whites. Understatement is usually better than garish.

LED Lights: The Future Of Lighting

LED stands for light emitting diode. LED’s are not new, they are the tiny red or green lights on the front of your stereo that tells you that the power is on. Some set-ups have quite a few of them to indicate the state of preparation of the equipment. However, there is a new wave of interest in LED lighting by manufacturers. There is talk of LED’s being the future of lighting. In fact, there always has been these rumours about LED’s, but nothing ever appeared to come of it.

This renewed interest in LED lights started in 2004 when vehicle manufacturers took another look at using LED lighting in car headlamps. In 2008, Lexus manufactured the first ever car, the Lexus 600, with LED headlamps. These cars were exported all over the world except for North America. However, the 600’s headlamps were or are not true LED headlamps, the main beam is produced by filament bulbs.

The first true LED headlamps were fitted to the Audi V10 R8 sports car also in 2008 and the first American automobile was the Cadillac Esplanade Platinum in 2009. However, there is an inherent problem with high power LED lighting, the rear of the diode produces a lot of heat. In fact, a group of high power LED’s produces sufficient heat to damage itself and melt the headlamp casing.

There are ways around this using heat sinks and cooling fans, but these solutions are not perfect, so technicians and scientists are still looking for ways to solve this problem. On the other hand, the front of the LED lights produces almost no heat at all, so if there is vapour in the headlamp unit and the ambient temperature is below freezing point, then ice crystals will form on the LED’s distorting and dampening the rays of light.

Nevertheless, scientists are sure that these teething problems will be surmounted and that LED lighting will one day be the most inexpensive form of lights to use. In fact, it is already very inexpensive to use and the LED lights units themselves last a long time. It is just the issue of overheating.

Besides their use in car headlamps, LED lighting units can be seen in flashlights and in other parts of cars. Manufacturers are using LED lights more and more often in brake lights, flashing indicator lights and hazard warning lights, because there is no problem at all with these quite low powered LED lights.

LED lighting used to be either green or red, but now it comes in more colours. White and blue are common. The coloured lights that you see under some cars are another instance of LED lights. They serve the useful purpose of making the car of motorbike more highly visible. All right, that may not be why they were fitted, but nevertheless they increase the vehicles’ visibility.

Many more uses will be found for LED lighting over the coming years. You will find incandescent bulbs and even fluorescent tube lighting being phased out in favour of LED lighting as the problems are surmounted, because LED lighting is still in its infancy.

The Basics Of How To Make A Quilt

Constructing a quilt takes patience and precision, because there is a great amount of stitching to be done and that stitching has to be neat, straight and even. The material itself requires measuring and cutting and that is to say nothing of choosing and buying the material itself and the batting or stuffing.

You could leave out the stuffing if you want your quilt to be a duvet cover, but more on that later. In this piece we will take a basic look at how to make a quilt.

The first step in making a quilt is designing it. You can do this yourself, but if you are a novice, it would be easier to select a quilt pattern from a craft shop or craft web site. You ought to attempt to train your mind to envisage the final product, the completed quilt. Some people have this ability naturally, but I think that it can be learned.

Do you want a plain quilt or a patterned one? Do you want a patchwork quilt? Patchwork quilts are more of a problem than just using three sheets of cloth, naturally, but otherwise the principle is the same.

Once you have purchased your cloth, wash it as you usually would, dry it and iron it. Cotton is lovely and easy for the novice, you can move on to other fabrics later.

Never use these cutting instruments for anything but quilt or dress making and never, ever cut paper with them. You will also require a large sheet of plywood to lay on your table, so that the rotary cutter does not damage it.

You will also need quilter’s pencils for marking the cuts. There are different kinds on the market ranging from chalk to lead to soapstone. You will also need pins and needles and thread. When you have these tools and accessories you are ready to baste. Instructions on this will be with your pattern. There is a device to help you do the pinning, because your fingers can get fairly sore after a while. Do not pin your quilt to the carpet.

Quilting is the process of sewing the three layers, the patterned quilt top, the batting or padding and the backing together. This can be done by hand or by machine. Sewing by hand is conventional, but sewing by machine is stronger. and faster. Then you are clear to do the binding. This also assists to give your quilt a professional look. If you want a duvet cover, you do not need batting and you can not quilt the fabric.
