Buying or Building a PC – Which is Better?

If you’re into technical stuff and have had computers before in the past, you might have even built one… Was it a good choice? Let’s talk about building a computer vs buying one from a company.

If you would have asked me this question a while back I’d say just to build one yourself. But today things have changed. You can get a computer for a few hundred dollars, and it just comes installed with Windows and everything. So building one yourself (including buying the software) may not be the best choice. Buying a prebuilt one might be viable.

There’s one thing that I should point out. If you are going to be purchasing a pre-built computer you won’t have the same kind of quality as somebody who did everything themselves. You won’t be able to add on specific parts that you want, like CD reading hardware or a high end graphics card. So when buying a pre-built PC… you lose a bit of control and quality.

If you just went with a normal computer that was being built from a major manufacturer, then you probably wouldn’t be able to have some of these high end things. But it doesn’t matter if you aren’t going to be using those anyway.

Here’s another major point. How long are you going to want your PC to be with you for?

It’s simple why I’m asking this from you. If you are going to want your PC to last a while… buying a Compaq, HP, Dell, or similar pre-built PC model won’t be right for you. That’s simply because they are already at the maximum performance for their hardware.

On the other hand, if you were able to build the computer yourself… You will probably be able to make it upgradeable in the future while keeping your cost really low.

By going this route you’ll not only have a better computer now, but you can switch out the processor in the future and have an even faster PC. You can switch out the memory and processor alone to make it feel much faster. Throw in a new hard drive and you have a brand new PC for very little spent. Imagine if a new piece of CD hardware comes out in 6 months? You can just buy it and stick it on.

Just double check and make sure that you know what you’re doing. If you don’t you might not be able to make things work out, and it’s nice to have a manufacturer warranty sitting there to assist you if the PC messes up.

Conquering Writers’ Block (part one)

If you are composing articles in order to promote web sites, either your own or those of someone else for a fee, the first thing to do is select subjects that you are at least slightly interested in. Let’s take for granted from here on that you are writing to support your own web sites.

Well, in all probability you would not have began a web site on a subject that you know nothing of and have no interest in. I have tried writing on topics I know little of and, although it can be accomplished (500 words is not a lot), I do not think that I have ever been really happy with the results.

So, let’s begin by picking a site that is interesting to us, but is not so middle-of-the-road that you have no opportunity of ranking on Google for a few niche words.

The most popular topics are: love, health, sport, cars, insurance, travel, fashion and dieting but you would be hard pressed to make any money from sites in those areas because they are snowed under by people with a lot more resources than you or I.

Therefore, you have to step back a bit. Choose one of the above and drill down until there is much less competition, but stay within your interest group.

For example:

Love: I am married to a Thai woman, so I could have a website on mixed marriages, mixed race marriages, Buddhist-Christian relationships in marriage (or dating), living in Thailand with your Buddhist wife, etc, etc.

Health: diabetes is a big killer in our village. The topic is too big, but what of cooking for an aging diabetic, Asian diabetic recipes, diabetes mellitus etc, etc?

Sport: I have no real interest in sport, but I could compose a site on where to go in London during the 2012 Olympic Games.

Cars: no interest again, but I am interested in the technology of hybrid vehicles This could be further refined to hybrid cars or motorcycles from one country of continent.

I won’t go through the rest of the list, but I think that I have illustrated the strategy. Then you need keywords that people use to look for websites on these subjects. Type ‘Google keyword tools’ into Google and you will see a assortment of free keyword tools to help you find the best ones.

Then, you purchase a URL that matches one of those keywords – hopefully the one that is most sought for every month. You will require at least five interesting pages of about 500 words each for your new web site to have a lot of chance.

Then you will need at least two or three articles to advertise each page. These articles will get you backlinks which will make your website rise to page one on Google for your keywords. Therefore, you need 10-15 keyword (phrases) for each fledgling website.

I create two-three websites at a time, because variety makes writing easier. It is hard to come up with 10 original pieces and five web pages in five days, but not so difficult to write 20 articles and 10 web pages in 10 days. The readers will not be so bored either.

Although the web site has to be interesting to you for you to be able to write so much about it, it also has to be interesting to others or you are working for your own enjoyment and no money. However, judging what will become a successful web site is impossible.

What Is Formula Drifting?

Unless you are a aficionado of racing cars, there is a good chance that you have not heard of Formula D Racing. Formula D has its adherents naturally, yet it is still not as commonly known as the other kinds of racing like Formula One, Drag Car Racing, NASCAR or Cross Country Rallying. This is partly because it is a pretty new form of car racing.

Each year the national television coverage is a bit more widespread, but it is taking a long time to prise some of the airtime away from the more traditional sports. Once you have seen a competition though, the chance is that you will become hooked on this exhilarating sport that they have Christened Formula D.

The ‘D’ in Formula D stands for ‘drifting’ which is another name given to the sport. Drifting refers to the angle of the car with reference to the sides of the road at any given moment. Drifting through bends allows the car to maintain its highest possible speed in a bend. Drifting sounds natural and therefore commonplace, yet it is actually very hard to do well.

Drifting takes skill and plenty of practice. Drivers are judged partially on their talent at drifting. There are in fact two aspects of Formula D or two types of drifting. There are the traditional style qualifying runs and there are also tandem battles. Qualifying runs involve the driver racing solo flat out against the clock, drifting as necessary to maintain the highest speed they can.

However, tandem runs involve two car drivers who are being judged on their skills at outwitting the other driver. The judges are looking for the line of drift, the speed of the cars, overtaking, collisions and much more. Driving in the tandem runs really sorts the men out from the boys.

Formula Drifting grew up a little haphazardly, but there have been serious attempts to regulate it. At the moment the Formula Drift Championship is the only professional drifting championship that is sanctioned by SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Pro Racing in the United States, although there are frequently amateur local drifting competitions held unofficially.

There has to be more officially sanctioned races so that standards are maintained and each driver follows the same set of regulations. This is the only way that the television channels will pick up on drifting and help advertise it more. Drifting is new to the United States, but the first Drifting Races took place in 2004, so not all that long ago anyway. It is still very much a modern sport.

At the moment the country where Formula D is most well-liked is Japan, yet that is likely to change once the American media gets to grips with Drifting. Do not be worried about going over your initial lines in order to draw the shapes more realistic. When you start, your car may look as if it is emerging from a fog, but the next time you draw a car, the lines will be better and more truthful from the start.

The foremost thing is not to become worried about making mistakes yet merely listen to critics who have tried drawing themselves.

Overcoming Writers’ Block (part two)

Regardless of what the statistics tell you, some sites will soar and others will flop and you are a better man than I am if you are able to work that out 12 months in advance. My rule is, that if a web site does not triple my financial outlay in a year, I ditch it.

I do not count the articles because they can be recycled to point at other pages and the web pages can be recycled as new web pages on new or old web sites or, at the last resort, into articles.

For that reason, I have classes of loosely related sites based on the foremost topics I have identified, to wit, love, sport, cars, health, travel etc.

The main thing is to start with what people want – not what you would like. Then, attempt to find a niche within that market that interests you. The more removed your personality is from the norm, the more vital this is.

Never begin with yourself, but you may twist the subject back to something that you know something of or are prepared to research because you are keen on it. I do a heck of a lot of investigation and really like doing it.

I am not concerned about collecting gold and gems, but my wife is and she wants my opinion often, so I am learning. Her son is getting married on 28-12 and he has to give his wife an ounce of gold as a gift – that is what her mother wants for her, which is a further incentive to learn about gold, investing and market trends and swings, because I have to pay for that gold.

There are so many things to write about.

I would like to write a site on orchids – I know nothing about them, but they grow like weeds here and they are my wife’s favourite flower. If that is excessively narrow, perhaps ‘Thai Gardens’.

I was in Nan the other day renewing my visa. I have already written a site on how to get a visa, but there is a stone-age tribe living in Nan Province of northern Thailand! 285 km from my home. They live in bivouacs and are nomadic. They are 10,000 years behind the remainder of Thailand.

My wife is getting skin spreading over one of her eyes. It can easily be removed and will need doing after the wedding, but I can see a site on cataracts coming up.

There are hundreds of millions of us Boomers so topics for us are sure to be popular. We are aging, entering a new stage of life, are computer literate and are not poor. That’s a great blend.

A further thought is: a man on the radio said the other day that there are more middle-class people in India than the entire populace of Europe. Think about that!

And it is growing by hundreds of thousands a year. And China is twice the size of India. So they have (or soon will have) a middle-class equalling the population of Europe and America combined. That is apart from the upper-class.

Discover what interests those nouveaux-riches and you will strike it big. I think that they love old-world style. Old European ’style’ – not antiques, but silver salvers, beautiful whiskey glasses, posh dog collars, fancy walking sticks, Panama hats, silk scarves, sensible shoes, home schooling, English language courses, etc, etc.
